I had to choose
you or me
I chose you.
You had to choose
me or you,
You chose yourself
So we loved you twice
and me not at all.
You left me anyway.
You left me
and empty.
Another came along.
I had to choose
Her or me
I chose me.
She had to choose
Her or me
She chose herself
We left each other anyway
and empty.
You came back.
And I chose you again.
Always, I guess.

Poets, madness and lies.

  1. The artistry of this poem lies in its short lines, enjambment, repetition and lack of stanza division. You just know how to craft a poem that corresponds its words.

  2. In a perfect world, we’d be able to choose ourselves AND the one we love. Each of us would be whole because we found the one who also chose us and themselves. Ah, but it’s not a perfect world, is it? Heaven on earth? Only when we make it so. Keep dreaming! Thanks for writing. Your thoughts inspire mine.

  3. Thanks for your transparency. Your creative style let your readers into your reality, you show so much strength in valuing yourself. Forgiveness and making your own decisions, then moving on. There is better and more for you!

  4. I totally understand having been through the same thing! Now I’m hoping to find the connection which chooses to honor the individual and the relationship. Where we remember that all 3 entities deserve an existence.

  5. Hi Utsav, thanks for stopping by and reading my stories! I really enjoyed reading your poem, it’s well written, incredibly real and relatable. Well done! 🙂
