A ghost with a beating heart

A ghost with a beating heart

A ghost with a beating heart

I’ve been asked
‘Are you okay?’
Way too many times.
And I’ve answered
Way too many times
‘I am fine.’
My voice has been firm
Quite unlike my smile
That trembles
For just a little while
But manages to lie.
I try.
There are no cuts
On my hand,
And no dust
On my shoulder.
It’s just
My damn eyes.
They cannot seem to lie.
I’ve been asked
Way too many times
I’m tired.
But I’ve answered
Every single time
‘I am fine.’

  1. I liked the rhyme you used in it. As well, I love your use to short sentences and lines to elucidate the intense feeling of finality that you create through your words and repetition.

  2. It’s sad how so many people can relate to this. It’s like nobody want’s to admit that we can’t be feeling “fine” like always… But that is just a part of life, right? Everybody has a bad day or a bad week eventually.
Why are we so afraid of our emotions? I’m also asking myself here because I do the same thing. Mostly it’s because I’m tired of talking about deep and relevant stuff but on the other hand I am absolutely bored about small talk and everyday conversations. But awkward silence is even worth… Isn’t this sort of a vicious circle?

  3. “i’m” fine. One of the most common lies, one of the easiest. Perhaps it is a lie that many of us share. And yet we don’t. How strange we are. Beautiful words. I hope you’ll share it even more.

  4. I’m guilty of saying this too. I feel like if you did tell people the problem most wouldn’t care. Some are only asking to appear concerned or sympathetic and a small majority actually care. The hard part is opening yourself up to the wrong person . I tend to do this on a regular. But long story short I can completely relate. Beautiful!

    1. I guess we all do the same thing. Here’s something that isn’t a lie though, you will be fine someday. Till then, let the world see the beautiful smile that you have. 🙂

  6. I love the repetition in the opening and closing lines.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and struggles. You aren’t alone in this. I’ve had to learn when is the right moment to not just say “I’m fine,” and to actually share with someone what I’m going through. Bit by bit, it helps. 🙂
